We were able to answer many of the multiple research questions that the experiment was designed to address, whereby we described the behavioural and physiological responses of trout to thermal and FW exposure. We had a strong focus on response to thermal treatments which was not originally planned, and also determined that knowledge from studies on Atlantic salmon are not necessarily transferrable to rainbow trout.
A total of 1319 animals were used in this experiment, of which 263 were considered mild and 1056 of moderate load. The preliminary results of behaviour and welfare and physiology suggest the severity of treatments was mostly moderate.
The elements of the experiment that could be adjusted or improved, with regards to the 3 R's, are discussed but essentially we consider the measures we planned to have been adequate for the experimental setup.
