Influence of light regime and water flow on halibut metamorphosis
1 Purpose
In this experiment, we will investigate the influence of light regime and water movement on the metamorphosis process of Atlantic halibut. In halibut production, abnormal metamorphosis is regularly recorded (malpigmentation, not complete eye migration). New knowledges are important to improve the welfare and health of larvae and young juveniles in production.
2 Distress
In this experiment, we will investigate whether lighting and water movement has an effect on these parameters and can improve the process to limit biological and economical losses.
Fish will be affected by moderate stress. Changes in light regime and water movement can induced highest abnormal metamorphosis (increased incomplete eye migration, increased malpigmentation).
We would like to improve the growing conditions of first-feeding larvae to improve welfare and health and limit the biological and economical losses in farming.
3 Expected benefit
Results will be benefits for halibut farming, by improving the growing conditions of first-feeding larvae to improve welfare and health and limit the biological and economical losses.
4 Number of animals, and what kind
The experiment will be run with a total of 3 production tanks. Two experimental groups and a control group. A total of 20 000 larvae.
5 How to adhere to 3R
Smaller tanks than fish farm will be used for the experiments.
