Enroll 100 fry per group, and a total of 12 (6 x 2) groups. The fry will be given a bath in three different live innocuous bacterial dilutions. The first group will be given a dilution of 3 different bacteria (bacteria a), the second group will be given a bath in 3 other bacteria (bacteria b). The third group a mix of the two bacterial dilutions a and b. The fourth group will be given two baths with a time interval of four weeks with a dilution of bacteria a. The fifth group will be given two baths with a time interval of four weeks, with a dilution of bacteria b.Sixth group is negative control. All groups will have a second duplicate. Mortality and weight gain will be monitored for 90 days post challenge.
No adverse effect from treatment is expected.
The results from the study will show if the probiotic bath will have the same positive effect on an early stage in freshwater as it has on smolt in seawater, where it increases fish health and fish weight. Treatment of fry at this stage will make distribution easier and make healthier smolt and less mortalities.
