This project is based around examining the pathohysiological responses of Atlantic salmon to exposure to the topical parastiicide hydrogen peroxide. Use of hydrogen peroxide commercially as a disinfectant has been undertaken without any understanding of the physiological resposnes of the fish to exposure. This study intends to investigate the responses of the fish in an attempt to better understand the efects of treatment on fish physiology and indicate reasons for acute mortality that can sometimes occur during treatments. The physiological responses of fish to this common treatment in aquaculture will be characterised using a real-time in situ monitoring system for cardio-respiratory variables. In addition, concentration-time studies will investigate the development of gill pathology in response to hydrogen peroxide exposure. The effects and impacts of enhanced
organic load in the water during hydrogen peroxide exposure will also be examined using a cultured alge.
