Test the efficacy of compounds x, y and z against parasite L in Atlantic salmon
FORSØKETS FORMÅL: The objective of the trial is to document efficacy and pharmacokinetics of selected compounds against parasite L infesting Atlantic salmon. This is a trial planned at the preliminary feasibility phase of the project and therefore the scope of the trial is limited.
FORVENTEDE SKADEVIRKNINGER PÅ DYRENE.
The experiment will be classified as moderately stressful overall as the study involves infestation with parasite L (mildly stressful involving a limited number of parasites/ fish and shorter infestation period of 3 weeks and efficacy measured over 1 week when compared to other experiments like an in feed trial and/ or immunization experiments where the effect must be measured over several weeks) and treatment with a sub lethal dose of test compounds x, y and z which can be considered moderately stressful(According to forsøksdyrforskriften Vedlegg B Del III punkt 2e). The compounds x, y and z are already tested for safety in Atlantic salmon under the same parameters used in this study .
FORVENTET VITENSKAPELIG ELLER SAMFUNNSMESSIG NYTTEVERDI:
Parasite L is a persistent threat to the salmon farming sector and results in large scale economic losses. Additionally, animal welfare is also compromised when the parasite number exceed a certain limit. It is expected that if found promising in this study, these test compounds could be further developed as potential therapeutic agents against parasite L.
HVOR MANGE OG HVA SLAGS DYR SOM SKAL BRUKES: 420 Atlantic salmon smolts will be used in this study
HVORDAN KRAVENE OM ERSTATNING, REDUKSJON OG FORBEDRING SKAL ETTERLEVES
ERSTATNING: An effect study on live fish needs to be done because the parasite L can behave or respond differently when attached to fish as opposed to an in vitro experiment where they are deprived from their natural host and source of feed/ nutrition.
REDUKSJON: Approximately 5-10 fish per parasite count and sampling is used here. The objective of the experiment is to identify near to 100% efficacy dose and therefore a statistics based sample size calculation is not used but the fish numbers are considered enough based on previous experiments with same compounds (FOTS ID 19121) and results from in vitro studies.
FORBEDRING: Fish will be euthanized by anesthetic overdose for sampling and parasite count. Fish will be handled gently according to internal SOPs at ILAB. Use of humane endpoint (euthanizing of moribund fish) will reduce the suffering for individual fish if some adverse effect of challenge or treatment surfaces.
