Test the efficacy of substances x,y and z against pathogen A administered through bath or feed in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Parasite A is very important in Salmon farming both from an economic and welfare perspective. Some of the chemicals already in use have become ineffective due to development of resistance. Substances x,y and z are chemicals that showed promising results in in vitro studies against parasite A but the in vivo efficacy for different doses have to be demonstrated through further fish trials. The safety of these substances in Atlantic salmon has been established. The therapeutic effect of these substances may be acheived by administration by bath or through feed. Therefore this application covers in vivo testing through both bath and feed.

The effect of infection with parasite A could be be classified as moderate because the study will be carried out under controlled conditions. Moreover, the safety of using the substaces x, y and z on Atlantic salmon has already been established. A total of 1160 Atlantic salmon will be used in the study. This will include smolts reared in seawater. There are no alternatives to efficacy testing on live fish at present but the dose ranges for substances x, y and z has been optimised due to the use of invitro testing directly on the parasites.This therefore, prevents the use of much wider dose range and therefore more fish in the experiment. Fish will be accommodated in a favourable light regime and water quality will be monitored. Fish that appears to be suffering or in any kind of distress will be euthanized humanely.

It is expected that if found effective in this study, these compounds could be potential candidates as therapeutic agents against parasite A.
