1 Purpose
The primary objective is to develop key knowledge on lesser sandeel egg and larvae development, swimming behavior and orientation cues, early life sensitivity to oil spill and sandeel population structures. The new knowledge is critical to risk assessment of the cumulative impacts of petroleum activities, fisheries and climate change to be used in oil industry project planning and governmental regulation.

2 Distress
The oil exposed fish will be affected by moderate stress. Oil will and might induced common oil development syndrome such as craniofacial deformities, body tail deformities, dysfunction of heart and decreasing of swimming activities. We would like to demonstrate that the oil activities impact the population of sandeel by leading numerous defects in their biology and physiology in order to protect the species, ecologically important for the marine ecosystems.

3 Expected benefit
Collection of data in order to improve risks assessment of petroleum activities and creation of management tools for the species protection.

4 Number of animals, and what kind
16000 early life stages will be used to perform the experiments.

5 How to adhere to 3R
To study the effect of oil pollution on the behavior of marine fish larvae, this must be tested in practice. This knowledge can only be achieved by in vivo experiments. We use the early life stages as alternative, to be able to estimate the long term effect.
