Through in vitro investigation, several potential feed supplements have been identified as having potential anti-amoeba effects on the gill pathogen Neoparamoeba perurans. These compounds are of natural origin that have been tested under pilot test conditions with apparent efficacy (approval 8494). The plan is to undertake a larger scale study to assess potential efficacy by incoporating these into a standard feed and feed to salmon smolts. Fish will then be challenged With Neoparamoeba perurans and the development of disease over the subsequent 6 weeks will be assessed along with gill inflammatory markers and immune responses. Control fish will receive the standard diet without supplementation. This study uses background knowledge from in vitro and pilot in vivo tests to formulate a potentially effective test diets.
