The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) is a national governmental body, whose aim is to ensure that food and drinking water are as safe as possible for consumers and to contribute to a high level of plant, fish and animal health. We also contribute to ethical keeping of animals and encourage environmentally friendly production. In addition we regulate and control cosmetics and animal health personnel. Our broad expertise is employed to stimulate and improve our field.

Our role is to draft legislation and provide guidance on existing legislation, perform risk-based inspections, monitor food safety as well as plant, fish and animal health, provide updates on developments in our field and plan for emergencies. We advise the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Care Services.

The mission of the NFSA is to:

  • Ensure safe food and drinking water
  • Contribute to healthy plants, fish and animals
  • Contribute to ethical keeping of fish and animals
  • Contribute to good quality, honesty and fair trade in food production
  • Encourage environmentally friendly production

In addition, we aim to be a forward-looking and efficient organisation.
